December is almost upon us and for that reason, my last post for November features brown. One of these two cute brown hats
A wonderfully pleated skirt, from a friend’s wardrobe and a fine gauge sweater worn over another top (both my daughter’s I believe).
It’s the last day of my fall term class and the year itself is hurtling to a close.
Thanksgiving has come and gone celebrated a bit differently again this year. We went somewhere else, had dinner with friends and new acquaintances, a far cry from our usual hosting. I’m drawn back, as I usually am, to the deep need I have for ritual. Thanksgiving is a ritual from the mundane brining of the turkey to the reflection on our gratitudes. Some of the traditions have changed through the years — one year we had everyone write down at least one thing they were grateful for and mixed these up so that someone else read someone else’s gratitude. In a very early year of establishing our own Thanksgiving we played two truths and a lie. Some things remain constant. From then to now, I try to fit everyone at one table even the littler ones. Mashed potatoes are NOT optional. David’s dressing (baked outside the turkey) is the best. There has to be pumpkin pie. And please, save the turkey skin for me.

Sometimes we need to discard ritual and tradition. Or at least take a break from them. Open the windows and let the breath of new sweep through the house. Take a fresh look at what we’re doing (or not doing) and whether those actions still satisfy. Then open the door again to welcome back those things that are important to us; be they groups of friends to eat with or merely mashed potatoes.
Thanksgiving may be my favorite holiday. Next year it will be back at my house.
